With the release of iOS 10 just weeks behind us, you’re probably still getting used to the impressive new features that were added in the update. Since this was a much more functional iteration than many people realize, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most helpful tips and tricks for those who don’t have time to discover the hidden wonders of iOS 10 intermittently as they use their device. There are far too many new features to list them all here, but this is a great start for those who want to know the best new things about their Apple device, and who doesn’t want that?
It is important for your health that you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, and now the Clock app has made that much easier with the Bedtime setting. It allows the user to input a certain number of stats about their sleep habits, and it will automatically set up an alarm each morning and bedtime reminders in the evening. By following the app’s recommendations, you can learn to maintain a perfect sleep schedule.
2. Storage Optimize
Now that the 16GB iPhone model is no more, it is unlikely you’ll have problems with storage. However, if you’re the type that likes to carry their entire iTunes library with them in their phone, you’re in luck. The Storage Optimize feature allows the user to automatically set storage thresholds at which the system will delete songs from the library that haven’t been played recently.
3. Avoid Tolls
The Maps app includes an impressive GPS system already, but the addition of iOS 10 brings a feature that makes it easy to avoid those costly tolls that were automatically included in routes before. With iOS 10, when you use Maps to generate a route, you simply toggle a switch that will prevent tolls from being included. You can even have the app avoid highways as well, which could lead to some interesting road trips.
4. Siri App Integration
A lot of people probably haven’t taken full advantage of Siri in the past because it felt like she was limited in what she could do. However, Siri in iOS 10 is finally able to integrate with apps. Many apps already have Siri compatibility, like Uber, Lyft, and many others. It won’t be long before you’ll be able to order a pizza just by asking Siri.
5. Delete Native Apps
Those pesky apps that clutter the home screen of your device are finally a thing of the past, if you’d like them to be. You can now delete native apps in iOS 10, including Stocks, Music, Mail, Contacts, Compass, and basically any others that aren’t crucial to the operation of the device, like Settings and Camera. Don’t worry, if you decide you want them back, you can re-download them from the App Store, which you also can not delete.
6. Voicemail Transcription
Listening to your voicemail might not be your preferred way of communication, in which case you can simply use the new Voicemail Transcription setting. You can now read you voicemail from the same place in iOS 10 where you listen to them. The service is still in its infancy, but it is surprisingly accurate with clearly spoken words.
7. Landscape Script
One of the most incredible new features of iOS 10 is the handwriting feature included in Messages. The feature becomes even more impressive when you realize you can simply rotate your phone to landscape mode while in a text thread and the handwriting feature activates automatically. It’s also much easier to write with your finger while in landscape mode, which makes it that much more intuitive.
8. Find Apple Watch
The Find My iPhone app has proven to be exceptionally helpful at preventing the loss or theft of iOS devices, and now that protection has spread to Apple Watches thanks to iOS 10 and watchOS 3. Using the same platform as the Find My iPhone app, users can now erase the contents of their lost Apple Watch. You can also use the app to put the watch in Lost Mode or have it play a series of chimes to help locate it around the home.
9. Camera From Lock Screen
Photo opportunities sometimes last only a few seconds, and now it is easier than ever to capture those moments with an iPhone thanks to iOS 10. You can now access the camera without unlocking the phone in order to quickly snap a photo. The phone remains locked so others can’t use the camera to access your photos or your info in any way.
10. Find On Page
Using Safari was already very intuitive in iOS, but the new Find On Page feature makes searching even easier than it was before. If you’re browsing a long page of text with Safari, but you know the exact word of phrase you need to find, you can now simply press the Share button at the bottom of the page, which displays all the options for interacting with the website. Find On Page allows you to quickly type a search phrase and locate every instance of it on your current Safari page.
These are just a handful of the many tips and tricks you can learn to help optimize the way you use iOS 10. Don’t be afraid to tinker with the device in your down time in order to find other new and exciting things the operating system can accomplish.
