Buying a new smartphone has become even more of a challenge with multiple platforms and sized phones to choose from. If you’ve already decided you want an iPhone as your next smartphone, here is more information about the current three sizes of iPhones offered and the benefits of each:
The iPhone SE is the newest and smallest of the three current models. Designed to accommodate the demand for a smaller and less expensive iPhone, the iPhone SE sports a screen measuring just four inches diagonally. The SE offers Retina display with an 1136 x 640 pixel resolution. The SE is a revitalization of the classically designed iPhone 5/5s and is a great choice for iPhone purists who want a small but perfectly usable phone that will easily fit in their pockets. The SE features Apple’s most up to date processor and is available with either 16 gigabytes or 64 gigabytes of internal storage.
iPhone 6 and 6s
The iPhone 6 and 6s are physically identical year old and current year flagship iPhone models. The 6 and 6s boost screen size to 4.7 inches diagonally. Despite the relatively small increase of 0.7 inches, the 6 and 6s screens feel decidedly larger than that of the SE. So much so that Apple included a feature allowing the user to double tap the home button to bring the top of the application or browser to the middle of the screen to avoid the awkward stretch to reach the top of the phone when using one-handed. The 6 and 6s increase pixel resolution to 1334 x 750 pixels, which proportionally replicates the resolution of the SE.
The 6 and 6s offer users a more traditionally sized screen for balanced user experience. Common activities such as web browsing, reading e-books, playing games and streaming video are all easily accomplished without leaving the user feel as though the phone lacks any real estate.
The as the newest model, the iPhone 6s is .2 millimeters thicker than the 6 and offers additional features such as 3D touch and an improved processor. Both models are available with either 16 gigabytes or 64 gigabytes of internal storage, while the 6s also offers a model with 128 gigabytes of internal storage.
iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus
The iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus offer larger, almost tablet sized, screens perfect for reading or watching videos. The 6 Plus and 6s Plus measure 5.5 inches diagonally and boast screen resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is slightly sharper than that of the smaller 6/6s and SE. Of course, with a larger screen comes a larger battery and increased heft, but the Plus options still don’t increase width over 7.1 millimeters, which is impressively thin for a phone with its size and capabilities.
The additional 0.8 inches of screen is optimal for those looking to use their phone as a portable computer or tablet, something that keeps them connected no matter where they are, but doesn’t limit them to a miniscule screen. Most users find the Plus model replaces and iPad or iPad Mini because its screen size makes it so easy to use.
However, with great size come greater limitations. The Plus models are not particularly pocket friendly. If you’re used to throwing your phone in a backpack or purse this may not be an issue for you, but for those of you that prefer pockets you might consider a smaller model. In addition to the convenience of carrying the phone, it can also be difficult for users with even average to large sized hands to reach across the entire screen of a Plus model. Though the Plus models also allow the user to bring an application halfway down the screen by double tapping the home button, the extra width of the phone can make one handed use extremely cumbersome.
The iPhone 6s Plus is also an imperceptible .2 millimeters thicker than the iPhone 6 Plus and features Apple’s 3D touch and improved processor. Both models are available with either 16 gigabytes or 64 gigabytes of internal storage, while the 6s Plus also offers a model with 128 gigabytes of internal storage.
Apple has done a nice job of anticipating customer’s needs in a smartphone and packaging up new and relevant technology in a variety of sizes. Whether its the small, workhorse like iPhone SE, the crowd-pleasing iPhone 6 or 6s, or the tablet replacement iPhone 6 Plus or 6s Plus, there are no shortage of options available.
